Description
Job Purpose:
Under the direction of the Hockey Academy Coordinator, the position of Hockey Academy Coach is responsible for providing instruction, direction, and safety to all students in a particular Hockey Academy class. This position is also responsible for subbing or aiding in other classes as well as assisting with all other Hockey Academy functions and special events. A Hockey Academy Coach is expected to comply with all Park District of Oak Park policies and procedures as well as rules put forth by the Hockey Academy Program. In addition, this position should conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times while at the rink.

Essential Functions:
  • Understand and comply with all Park District and Hockey Academy Program policies, rules and regulations.
  • Become familiar with the structure and organization of Hockey Academy including class descriptions and general information.
  • Provide level specific instruction to participants based upon current Park District and Hockey Academy standards.
  • Complete all paperwork as assigned including, but not limited to, attendance sheets, mid-season evaluations, and end of season evaluations.
  • Begin and end all classes on time.
  • Arrive at the rink no less than 20 minutes before class. Be ready and greeting students for class no less than five minutes before classes begins
  • Limit absences from class responsibilities. Secure substitutes when needed and complete all required paperwork in advance of missing class.
  • Attend all required pre-season trainings and in season meetings.
  • Distribute all flyers, promotional materials, and handouts as assigned.
Additional Functions:
  • Continue to expand hockey instruction knowledge through readings, seminars, and other educational opportunities.
  • Maintain a positive and cooperative attitude with all other Hockey Academy coaches and personnel.
  • Bring problems or issues regarding the Hockey Academy Program or rink to the attention of the Hockey Academy Coordinator the Aquatic and Rink Program Supervisor.
Knowledge, Skill and Work Experience:
Required:
  • Participation in previous hockey program
  • Strong skating abilities
  • Completion of all in-house pre-season trainings (done after hire)
  • Availability to work within Hockey Academy times. (Wednesday evenings, Saturday afternoons, Sunday mid-day).
  • Certification in advanced Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 1 month of employment and keep certification current. The District provides this training.

  • Membership in USA Hockey
Work Environment, Physical Demands and Considerations
  • Frequently- Skating, walking, standing,
  • Occasionally - Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, running, sitting
  • Strength - Work requires handling average weight (up to 50 lbs.) materials or equipment.
Environmental Considerations :
  • Normal office conditions for trainings and meetings
  • Worker is exposed to cold when in the rink.
  • Worker is exposed to quick changes in temperature from rink to lobby.
Cognitive Considerations:
  • Ability to present ideas and recommendations in a concise verbal and written manner.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to communicate with staff and participants in clear, concise manner.
  • Ability to handle questions, complaints and concerns from staff and public in a friendly, courteous and professional manner.

External: Patrons of Park District of Oak Park; residents of Oak Park, WSSRA, Partner Organizations including governmental and non-profit groups, and the Oak Park Business Community
